April Book Discussion Wrap Up

Good afternoon, Book Lovers:
We had a unique discussion last week. It was an interesting piece of science fiction, one with details and subplots that seemed to fit more in with the fantasy genre than sci-fi. None of us were overly enthused with "Appleseed," but no one hated it either; the general consensus was more "meh" or "hmm." Each of the three interconnected timelines had their supporters (this moderator liked that of John's and C's sets on frozen earth), but we were all a bit confused by Chapman, the satyr; his storyline played more like a piece of fantasy, with its mythological ties, magic, and Orpheus's head. Though an interesting attempt to connect the ancient times of mythology, gods, and magic down through the ages to a future without humanity's presence, it is rather muddled, and some felt it came off a bit forced. Most commentators found John's and C's storylines to have more of a traditional sci-fi feel, but they did not flow easily with Chapman's chapters. Also, some of the commentators found that the novel just ended, there wasn't a true resolution with the characters, and the story just.....stopped (side note: the idea that humanity could completely change our climate, arresting and reversing climate change in 20 years, as proposed by John, is ludicrous).
Finally, in keeping with our general "meh", it was "so-so", most of the attendees expressed that while they did not regret reading "Appleseed" they were not likely to read another book by author Matt Bell. Overall, it was a different discussion for April; see you all in May for "2001: A Space Odyssey" by legend Arthur C. Clarke.
